Q&A with Queensland Gaskets’ Business Development Manager Martin Alexander
With over 14 years of experience in the Defence, Aerospace, and Industrial sectors, our Business Development Manager, Martin Alexander, shares what to expect at Avalon airshow. In this interview, he opened up the innovative solutions that we are bringing to the supply chain and advanced manufacturing to shape the future of the industry.
How do Queensland Gaskets ensure the durability and precision required for aviation and aerospace applications?
“Decades of expertise have built our reputation. Our team has mastered the trade and is passing that knowledge to the next generation. With over two decades of experience in water jet cutting, our skilled specialists ensure precision and durability in every component we manufacture. We also leverage state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, including high-precision CNC machines, laser cutting, and advanced material processing technologies. These cutting-edge tools allow us to maintain the tight tolerances required for aviation and aerospace applications, ensuring every product meets the highest industry standards.”
Beyond the close partnership with OSAAP, what other solutions does Queensland Gaskets offer for defence and aerospace projects?
“Queensland Gaskets provides a range of high-quality materials, including EMI shielding for electronic protection, laminated shims, and military-grade bespoke products. We offer cutting-edge solutions for aerospace and defence applications through our exclusive distributorship with SSP (Specialty Silicone Products) in New York. Our strong supply chain ensures access to elastomers, shielding materials, Mil-Spec Laminated Shims, plastics, and non-asbestos fibres, which are essential for engineers requiring specialised materials.”
Are there any recent projects or collaborations you’re particularly proud of that highlight Queensland Gaskets’ contributions to the defence sector?
“We are a proud member of the Rheinmetall global supply chain. This relationship has developed into a true two-way collaboration. We also work closely with Boeing, providing advanced materials and solutions while supporting Australian industry growth. While global parent companies sometimes pose challenges, Boeing has shown great willingness to work with local Australian businesses like ours.”
How do you ensure long-term sustainability in the evolving defence sector?
“When our parts are integrated into a defence program, lives depend on their reliability. That’s why we constantly explore new materials, production methods, and cutting-edge solutions to maintain our high standards. Our relationship with SSP has deepened our understanding of advanced materials, and we continue to identify new opportunities for innovation. We’re not risk-averse, we embrace diversification and stay ahead of industry trends to ensure long-term sustainability.”
Collaboration is key in defence innovation. Are you engaged in any partnerships or initiatives that you see as game-changing?
“We’re deeply involved in the next generation of warfare technology, including unmanned systems and drone components and packaging. Ensuring high-value assets like drones and missiles are properly protected during transit and storage is a crucial aspect of our work. Through collaboration with companies like DroneShield for components, we are supporting cutting-edge defence technologies that will shape the future battlefield.”
What trends or challenges in the aviation and defence industries are shaping the way Queensland Gaskets and OSAAP approach their offerings?
“Government defence programs and projects are constantly shifting. What seems certain today might be cancelled tomorrow. That’s why diversification is critical. For example, OSAAP focuses on civil aviation alongside defence to avoid reliance on a single sector. Long-term sustainability means balancing opportunities across multiple industries.”
If there’s one key takeaway you’d like potential customers and partners to leave with after visiting your exhibit at Avalon, what would it be?
“We don’t just sell products, we build partnerships. Our mission is to provide assets that perform flawlessly because failure is not an option. Whether in aviation, defence, or emerging unmanned systems, we take pride in playing a critical role in safety, precision, and innovation.”
